Mr. Mark Rains

Mr. Mark Rains is currently serving his third term on the Marshall County Board of Education. Mark is a planning/scheduling supervisor at Mueller Company where he has worked for 20-plus years.

Mark and his wife, Shawnee, are current residents of the Asbury community. They have one son, Seth. Mark enjoys serving his church and community, as well as gardening and playing golf.

Mr. Tony Simmons

Tony and wife Sandra have been married for fifty-two years. They have lived in the Douglas Community for thirty-five years. 

They have three sons: David (Michelle), Jason (Jenny), and Adam(Kelly). 

They have three grandchildren: Dawson (Lani), Anna Kate, and Allie Kathryn. 

They have one great-granddaughter: Blakely Grace. 

Tony was a supervisor for the Marshall County Board of Education for thirty years (1981-2010). He also served as Attendance Officer for ten years, Migrant Recruiter for two years, Director of the Marshall Alternative School for two years, and was the system's first fingerprinting specialist where he fingerprinted prospective employees of the Marshall County Board of Education. 

Tony was elected as a member of the Marshall County Board of Education in 2012, where he represented the Brindlee Mountain School District for six years. 

He was re-elected for a second six-year term in 2018, where he currently represents the Douglas School District. He also serves as the Board's Chaplain. 

Tony is a member of the North Broad Street Church of Christ where he has served as Educational Director, Director of a jail ministry for 12 years, Nursing Home Visitation Committee, Prayer Warrior & Card Ministry, and Bible Study Teacher. 

He is a member of the Marshall County Republican Party, the Marshall County Chapter of the AARP, the Albertville High School Class of 1966 Reunion Committee, and the Douglas Senior Citizen's Center. 

His hobbies include gardening, writing for the Advertiser Gleam Newspaper, doing radio shows on radio stations WTWX 95.9 FM and WBSA 93.5 FM, and being a "Gramps" for Anna, Allie, Dawson, and Blakeley.

Mrs. Laura B. Byars

Laura Byars is serving District 1- as a board member of the Marshall County Board of Education since November 2022.  Byars served many children and communities throughout the Marshall County school system for 18 years.  After spending most of those years as a teacher in the classroom, she served as an Administrator of Education, as well as, Reading and Math Specialist/Coach.  As a lifelong scholar and educator, it is imperative to prepare our children for their future.  Educating children has always been her passion; therefore, she will strive to work collaboratively with parents, teachers, faculty, staff, board members, superintendent, local legislators, and community members, to create a positive learning experience for each and every child. 
 
Laura received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Athens State University and later completed her M.S. from Jacksonville State University in Instructional Leadership/Admin K-12. 
 
Laura is married to Shane Byars and together they have two sons, Austin, and Andrew Byars. The Byars reside in the Brindlee Mountain area.
